A gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner on Saturday night, triggering a chaotic evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and members of the Cabinet from the packed ballroom at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.
The suspect has been identified by law enforcement sources as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, a mechanical engineer and tutor from Torrance, California. He is in federal custody and is scheduled to appear in court today.
No attendees were seriously injured. One Secret Service officer was struck in the chest by a round that was stopped by his protective vest and is expected to make a full recovery.
What Happened
Β
The shooting sparked chaos inside the Hilton hotel ballroom, which was packed with thousands of journalists as well as President Donald Trump and members of his Cabinet.
Authorities believe Allen attempted to breach the ballroom after leaving his hotel room with a duffel bag containing multiple weapons. He used a stairwell to apparently avoid being seen, going down ten flights before emerging and beginning a full sprint toward the security checkpoint, where he was tackled by uniformed Secret Service personnel after a brief burst of gunfire.
Authorities currently believe Allen opened fire one to two times, followed by a Secret Service officer firing three to four rounds at him. Allen was not struck by gunfire but was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being placed in custody.
This was the first White House Correspondents' Dinner that Trump had attended as a sitting president.
Who Is Cole Allen
Β
Allen earned a degree in mechanical engineering at Caltech in 2017, before going on to receive a master's in computer science at California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 2025. He worked as a part-time tutor at C2 Education, a tutoring service in Torrance.
Allen purchased the shotgun used in Saturday's shooting in August 2025. He also owned a semiautomatic pistol purchased in 2023.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said on "Meet the Press" Sunday that authorities believe the suspect traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago, and then Chicago to Washington, D.C., where he checked into the hotel in the days before the event. Law enforcement sources said he checked in on Friday, the day before the event.
Students and people who knew Allen described him as intelligent, quiet, and friendly, with no outward signs of the violence that followed.
The Motive
Β
Allen wrote a statement saying he wanted to target members of the Trump administration and called himself a "friendly federal assassin," according to two law enforcement officials familiar with the document.
Just moments before the attack, Allen sent family members a note apologizing to his parents, colleagues, students, and bystanders for what he was about to do. "I don't expect forgiveness," Allen wrote. "Again, my sincere apologies."
A Bluesky account believed to belong to Allen and verified by NBC News included recent posts or reposts critical of Trump and his administration's policies, as well as of the U.S. war with Iran and Russia's war with Ukraine.
Allen's sister told the Secret Service and Montgomery County Police after the shooting that her brother had a tendency to make radical statements and had alluded to plans to do "something" to fix the world's problems.
The Charges and What Comes Next
Β
Allen faces two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said she expects additional charges as the investigation unfolds.
The Secret Service has confirmed an internal review of the security protocols at the event is underway. Questions have emerged about how Allen was able to check into the Washington Hilton β the same hotel hosting the dinner β days in advance, and how he transported disassembled firearms past hotel staff without detection.
The White House Correspondents' Association said its board will meet to assess the shooting and determine how to move forward. WHCA President Weijia Jiang called it "a harrowing moment for everyone in attendance" and expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement personnel for their response.
Trump, speaking at a White House briefing Saturday night, said: "I like not to think about it. I lead a pretty normal life, considering, you know, it's a dangerous life."
